Heatwave-how to stay safe in hot weather

With the UK experiencing unusually high temperatures, it’s important to take extra care during a heatwave. At Housing Solutions, your safety and wellbeing come first. As the heat rises, it’s important to take simple steps to protect your health and wellbeing during hot weather - both indoors and outside.

Keeping your home cool

  • Close curtains and blinds in rooms that get direct sunlight.

  • Ventilate your home by opening windows early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler outside.

  • Switch off unused lights and appliances - they generate heat.

Staying hydrated

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  • Avoid drinks that dehydrate you, such as alcohol and too much caffeine.

  • Keep a jug of cold water in the fridge for easy access.

Dressing for the weather

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes in light colours.

  • If you go outside, wear a hat and sunglasses and apply high-factor sunscreen.

Going out? Be sun smart

  • Try to stay indoors between 11 am and 3 pm, when the sun is strongest.

  • If you must go out, stay in the shade and take water with you.

  • Check in on neighbours, friends or relatives, especially those who may be more vulnerable.

Extra tips for comfort and safety

  • Use a damp cloth on your neck or wrists.

  • Keep your bedroom cool by closing blinds during the day and ventilating at night.

  • If you take regular medication, check the storage instructions. Some medicines may need to be kept cool - storing them in the fridge could be the safest option.

  • Look out for signs of heat exhaustion - like headache, dizziness, feeling sick, heavy sweating, or muscle cramps. These mean your body is getting too hot. If this happens, move somewhere cooler, drink water and rest straight away.

In case of emergency

If you or someone else feels unwell due to the heat -such as dizziness, confusion or fainting - dial 999 immediately.
